Alvin Loving Jr. was born in Detroit. He earned a BFA at the University of Illinois in 1963 and an MFA at the University of Michigan, where his mentor Al Mullen connected him to the Once Group.
His first solo show at the Whitney Museum ran from December 1969 to January 1970. He then moved away from hard-edge geometry into dyed fabric constructions and large paper and cardboard collages.
He kept making work for Detroit, including the 1972 mural A Message to Demar and Lauri, later removed, and Life, Growth, Continuity for Wayne State University's library in 1998. He held a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1986.
