Allie McGhee
A fixture of Detroit art since the 1960s, known for paintings he physically crushes into new forms.
This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.
McGhee was born in Charleston, West Virginia, attended Cass Technical High School in Detroit, and completed his degree at Eastern Michigan University in 1965.
In 1969 his mentor Charles McGee curated Seven Black Artists at the Detroit Artist Market. The group went on to form Gallery 7 on West McNichols, where McGhee taught art classes to young people.
He works with industrial paint and found media, and his Crushed Paintings turn compositions on vinyl, canvas or paper into amorphous forms. His retrospective Banana Moon Horn opened at Cranbrook Art Museum in 2021.
