Mikolowski was born in Detroit and took night classes at Wayne State and the College for Creative Studies. In 1969 she and her husband, Ken, started The Alternative Press in their basement.
She was part of the Cass Corridor scene, moved to Grindstone City in 1974, and later to Ann Arbor. "Everything I feel about Detroit goes into my big water paintings," she said. Her work is in the National Portrait Gallery and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
