Detroit's great street photographer, and a teacher to generations who followed him.
This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.
Rauhauser was born in Detroit and spent about 25 years working in engineering. Seeing a Henri Cartier-Bresson show at MoMA in 1947 turned him seriously toward photography. In 1951 Edward Steichen chose his Three on a Bench, Detroit River for The Family of Man.
From 1968 he helped the Detroit Institute of Arts expand its commitment to photography, cataloguing its collection and later advising the department. He co-founded Group Four Gallery in 1964 and joined the College for Creative Studies in 1970, teaching for more than 30 years.
He received the Kresge Eminent Artist Award in 2014. In 2008 he gave the DIA more than 400 photographs in memory of his wife, Doris.
