Carl Milles

Sweden's foremost sculptor spent two decades at Cranbrook and filled its campus with his work.

This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.

Milles was born in Sweden and was regarded as the country's pre-eminent sculptor by the 1920s. In 1931 he became sculptor in residence and head of the Department of Sculpture at Cranbrook Academy of Art, a post he held until 1951.

The Cranbrook Foundation acquired a large collection of his work in 1934, and dozens of his pieces remain on campus. He and his wife, Olga, became US citizens in 1945.

He retired from Cranbrook and returned to Europe, working at the American Academy in Rome. He died at Millesgården, his home near Stockholm, in 1955. Marshall Fredericks was among those who studied with him.
