Ed Emshwiller

A Lansing native whose Hugo-winning covers led to pioneering film and computer animation.

This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.

Emshwiller was born in Lansing and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1947. He then studied in Paris and New York.

Signing as Emsh, he made covers for Galaxy and other magazines and won five Hugo Awards. He moved into experimental film and video, and his Sunstone (1979) was an early 3D computer-generated work.
