Kamrowski was born in Minnesota and studied at the New Bauhaus and with Hans Hofmann. In the winter of 1939 and 1940, William Baziotes and Jackson Pollock dripped paint on a canvas he was working on, a work considered a link between Surrealism and Action Painting.
He moved to Ann Arbor in the 1940s to teach at the University of Michigan, in a teaching career of 38 years. He also made two Venetian glass mosaics for the Detroit People Mover. He died in Ann Arbor in 2004.
