Callahan was born in Detroit and worked at Chrysler, where he joined the camera club. He taught himself photography beginning in 1938, and a 1941 talk by Ansel Adams pushed him to take it seriously.

He taught at Chicago's Institute of Design from 1946 and later established the program at Rhode Island School of Design. His wife, Eleanor, was his main subject for years. He received the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
