Rolshoven was born in Detroit. He trained at Cooper Union in New York, at the Düsseldorf Academy, and in Munich with Frank Duveneck, becoming one of the "Duveneck Boys." He later spent years in Paris and London.

He lived for about 40 years in Florence, where he restored a 900-year-old house known as the Devil's Castle. In 1916 he set up a studio in the Governor's Palace in Santa Fe, and he became an early member of the Taos Society of Artists.

From 1920 until his death he divided his time among Florence, Santa Fe and Detroit. He died aboard a ship in the Atlantic in 1930. He was an elected member of the National Academy of Design.
