Collins was born in Davenport, Iowa, and lived in Ada most of his life. In the late 1920s he traveled to Paris with his mentor, Mathias Alten.
He worked as an illustrator and landscape painter before launching Mitzi McCoy in 1948. It evolved into Kevin the Bold, which ran for nearly 20 years. The Grand Rapids Public Museum holds a collection of his paintings.
