LeRoy Foster

A lifelong Detroiter whose murals celebrated Frederick Douglass, Paul Robeson and the city itself.

This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.

Foster was born in Detroit and won first prize at a Pen and Palette Club show at 14. In 1958 he co-founded the Contemporary Studio with Charles McGee and Henri Umbaji King, and in 1965 he was artist in residence at what is now the Charles H. Wright Museum.

His large murals include a Frederick Douglass work for the Detroit Public Library's Douglass Branch and Renaissance City at Cass Technical High School. He also illustrated Gwendolyn Brooks's Aloneness in 1971.
