Leza McVey

A Cleveland ceramist whose Cranbrook years connected her to Grotell and Takaezu.

This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.

McVey was born in Cleveland and married sculptor William McVey. He joined Cranbrook's faculty in 1947, and there she met Maija Grotell, whose large vessels influenced her work. On Grotell's recommendation, she taught a summer ceramics course.

She returned to Ohio in 1953. Her large, asymmetrical hand-built forms are often credited with helping pave the way for modern American ceramic art.
