Mike Kelley

One of the most influential artists of his time, he rebuilt his Westland childhood home in Detroit.

This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.

Kelley was born in Detroit and grew up in a 1950s ranch house in suburban Westland. He built his career in Los Angeles, working across performance, installation, drawing, painting, video, sound and sculpture.

His Half a Man series used thrift-store toys, blankets and stuffed animals to examine memory and repression.

Mobile Homestead brought him home. It is a full-scale replica of the Westland house, permanently sited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and his only public artwork. The front section can detach and travel as a trailer.
