De Amaral was born in Bogotá and studied fiber art at Cranbrook from 1954 to 1955, where she met her husband, Jim Amaral.
Her large wool and horsehair hangings moved beyond the flat picture plane, and she began using gold in 1975. She was in MoMA's Wall Hangings show in 1969.
