Percy Ives
The son of Lewis Ives, he brought a looser, more modern hand to Detroit portraiture.

Percy Ives worked in Detroit alongside his father, and his portraits also hang in the Michigan State Capitol.
His style was more modern than his father's. He painted alla prima, working wet on wet in one sitting, which leaves visible brushstrokes and a sense of spontaneity. His portrait of Chief Justice John McGrath, from about 1895, adds colorful background elements to a formal composition.
