Gamble was born in Detroit and lived in the 14th Street house his father built until his death. He studied with Joseph Gies, then in New York with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, and at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was an early member of the Scarab Club.

His sitters included Ty Cobb, Mayor Albert Cobo and Justice Frank Murphy. His official portraits hang in the Michigan State Capitol and the Michigan Supreme Court's Hall of Justice, and Wayne State University holds 22 of his works.
