Schnee was born in Frankfurt and her family fled to Detroit around 1938. She graduated from Cass Tech, Rhode Island School of Design and Cranbrook, where she was among the first women graduates.

She and her husband, Edward, ran a Detroit design studio and home store. Her textiles reached the General Motors Technical Center and the Ford Rotunda. She was named Kresge Eminent Artist in 2015, and her work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago and The Henry Ford.
