Samuel Cashwan

He led Michigan's WPA sculpture program, and his reliefs still mark the state's public buildings.

This artist's work is shown through the museum and artist links on this page while it remains under copyright or awaits a permission-cleared image.

Cashwan was born in Ukraine and moved to Detroit in 1916. After studying in Paris with Antoine Bourdelle, he returned in 1927 and headed the sculpture department at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts until 1942.

He supervised the WPA sculpture and ceramics program from 1936 to 1942, then designed for General Motors until 1965. His work can be found at Michigan State University, on Belle Isle and across the state.
