Guyton was born and raised in Detroit, on the street that gives the Heidelberg Project its name. His grandfather introduced him to art. He served in the Army, worked for Ford and Chrysler as a UAW member, worked as a firefighter, and trained for two years at the Center for Creative Studies.
He began the Heidelberg Project in 1986. It is now a Detroit landmark, and he has kept up a studio practice for more than 45 years.
His work is in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
