Gregory was born in Baxter Springs, Kansas. He was artist in residence at Cranbrook from 1932 to 1933, making works including Two Clowns on Unicycles, Ichabod Crane and Kansas Madonna.
The residency ended after a conflict with the academy's manager, when kilns shut down over a bank holiday ruined work in progress. He later made the Fountain of the Atom for the 1939 New York World's Fair.
